whokid :

I read online that the remington 9mm 147 grain I got is subsonic, what does that mean, and is this bad for self defense use? Im new to guns, but the gun store owner told me it was good, but Ive read mixed reviews now.

All subsonic means is that the bullets speed does not exceed the sound barrier. It will cause less wear and tear on your weapon. Far more important for self defense is that you hit what you aim at.

You pump three or four rounds from a 9mm subsonic into someone’s chest and unless he is wearing body armor he is toast. You hit the heart or between the eyes it only takes one.

Subsonic ammo is made for one reason – suppressors. Regular ammo being shot thru a silencer still puts out a “crack” as the bullet exits the suppressor, subsonic doesn’t; so all you hear is the clinking of the action.

Subsonic ammo is no better or worse than standard ammo, it just doesn’t have the terminal ballistics and energy of standard ammo.

You are fine…more grain equal to more force on impact…

Keep in mind that 147 grain subsonic loads generally penetrate more and expand less than 115 and 124 grain loads. According to most experts, the Corbon 115 grain JHP +P+ is the best self defense round for the 9mm. It packs a lot of punch.

The ballistics on the 147 gr Subsonic load in 9mm are very, very close to the old 38 Special 158gr Round Nose loads that were nicknamed “Widowmakers,” not because of their effectiveness, but the opposite! These weak old rounds were carried by cops for a hundred years.

As far as their being good for defense, get some Cor-Bon +P 115gr ammo, or the prefrags from Glaser or MagSafe, Don’t rely on 147 gr 9mm.

Well it definitely wouldn’t be the worst, look at getting Hornadys Critical defense 115 grain ammo. The Critical Defense ammo features a hollow point bullet the same “Flex Tip” polymer tip that Hornady uses in the LEVERevolution line of ammunition. The tip in the bullet prevents the hollow point from being plugged with clothing and helps ensure expansion. Because of the Flex Tip technology, Hornady claims to achieve 100% reliable expansion every single time. If i had a 9mm, that would be my ammo choice.
be safe.

The bullet is just moving slower. But it has better stopping power. I carry 147gr Hydra-Shok and it will do the same thing as a .45acp Full Metal Jacket. Subsonic just means it moves slower then the speed of sound.
